Dogs go through REM sleep just like we do, the stage most tied to dreaming. Researchers studying rats found brain activity during REM that closely echoed the day's earlier activity, the closest thing we have to proof this works the same way across mammals.

Nobody can confirm what a dog dreams about. But given how much of their day revolves around you, feeding, walks, play, it's a fair bet you show up more often than not.

How To Spot It

Twitching paws, soft whimpers, eyes moving under closed lids, the occasional muffled bark. All classic signs of a dog deep in REM. Best to let it ride out rather than wake them, the same courtesy you'd want mid-dream yourself.
