Knowing When It's Time to Say Goodbye to Your Dog

There's no good way to ease into this topic, so I won't try. If you're here, you're probably somewhere in one of the hardest stretches of loving a dog, and I'm sorry. There's no script that makes this easy, but here's some honest thinking that might help.

It's Rarely One Moment

Most of the time it isn't a single dramatic sign. It's a pattern. Is your dog still finding joy in the small stuff, a favorite sunny spot, a sniff on a walk, the treat at the end of the day? Are the good days still outnumbering the hard ones? That's usually the real question, not any one symptom.

Ask Your Vet Directly

You don't have to carry this decision alone. Vets have sat with this moment more times than you'd guess, and asking them plainly, "do you think we're getting close?", is one of the kindest things you can do for your dog and for yourself. There's no shame in wanting help with something this heavy.

Make the Time You Have Count

A month, a week, whatever it turns out to be, it's still real time together. Keep the familiar routines going as long as your dog can enjoy them: the same walk, the same spot on the couch, the same treat at the end of the day. Small and repeated beats big and rare here.

However this goes, the fact that you're even asking the question says everything about the life you gave them.
